We are a group of education leaders from across the state that have shared concerns with the direction of education policy in NYS and how it ultimately affects our students. The caucus exists to enhance the democratic operation and process within NYSUT in order to provide an equal voice to the rank and file membership.
Educational organizations from every corner of NYS representing students, teachers, parents, and local union leaders have joined forces to coordinate efforts in working towards a common goal. STCaucus has joined NYSAPE, Lace To The Top, Long Island Opt Out, NYS Refuse the Tests, and NY BATs in opposing the Governor's tone deaf and dangerous education reform agenda. These organizations hold a shared vision of ending the abusive nature of high stakes testing in New York's classrooms, with the following common goals:
In forum after forum last year, John King heard about the psychological damage being done to children as a result of this high stakes testing experiment. Parents and educators eloquently articulated the myriad of problems associated with the testing, from the destruction of the joy of learning, to increased test anxiety, and in many cases, school phobias requiring medication at remarkably early ages. The Governor continues to ignore the reality of the effects of high stakes testing despite the documented harm to New York public school children. An education reform agenda that deliberately excludes the needs of children must be opposed.
STCaucus is proud to stand alongside parents, educators, and student advocates uniting in our efforts to reclaim the promise of child-centered public education in New York.
